<strong>Teachers for Future Generations</strong><br />Each year, a handful of DKCLI graduates are awarded the prestigious title of khenpo. Khenpo Choying Dorje was appointed head principal of DKCLI by Rinpoche in 2013. He serves on the KF India Program Committee. “Dzongsar Institute is not only a renowned institution of higher education, it is also benefitting many Buddhist communities and therefore Buddhism as a whole. Many khenpos and teachers at Buddhist institutes and colleges in India, Nepal, Bhutan, even in Tibet received their education from Dzongsar Institute. Many people, both locally and globally, have told me in similar terms that Dzongsar Institute graduates are different from other graduates, not only in the quality of their education but also in their good manners. Dzongsar institute is producing not only good spiritual teachers but also leaders. We are trying to foster spiritual teachers, leaders, and managers for the 21st century. Khyentse Foundation is a key sponsor for this wonderful factory’s software. “Through a KF grant, I was sent to UC Berkeley as a visiting scholar in 2011 and encountered so many different cultures, different beliefs, and different worlds. It was tremendously helpful for me to gain teaching experience with people from different cultures and backgrounds.”

The English program at Dzongsar Institute has been running since 2006, helping the monks develop their English skills so they can communicate with western Dharma students, travel more easily, deal with monastery business, and—when their skills are good enough—to teach the Dharma in English or to do translation work. Two English teachers taught more than monks enrolled in the English program in 2013.

<strong><p id=DKCLI Medical Clinic Extends Services to Local Villages
The institute has operated an on-campus medical clinic supported by Khyentse Foundation since 2006. The clinic has a full-time nurse and visiting doctors on site twice a week to serve the primary and preventive health care needs of the monks and nearby villagers. From November 11 to 17, 2013, Khyentse Foundation India organized a free medical camp at the institute’s clinic for the second consecutive year. The medical camp is open to all villages around the area. Free consultation and medicines were provided to a total of 488 patients suffering from ailments such as influenza, colds, diarrhea, and asthma.

The inauguration of DKCLI took place November 19-21, 2004, in Chauntra Tibetan Colony, Himachal Pradesh, India. Early on the first day, as the air filled with aromatic smoke and jubilant trumpets sang, the ribbon was snipped to officially open the institute. Khenpo Kunga Wangchuk and Rinpoche took their seats with the other lamas in the main hall, followed by thousands of monks, uniformed schoolchildren, and foreign guests. Representatives from across the Himalayan range—Bhutan, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, and of course Tibet—came to pay their respects, most wearing colourful traditional dress. The temple is designed to accommodate four thousand people, but many more squeezed in on each of the three days to receive teachings, hear speeches by the special guests, and enjoy cultural presentations.
